|  Last week Kieren filmed a guest spot as a character called Andre in the second season episode Mr Sandmann of NBC's GRIMM in Portland, Oregon. The air date for the episode has not yet been announced.
GRIMM is a drama series inspired by the classic Grimm Brothers' Fairy Tales. After Portland Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) discovers he's descended from an elite line of criminal profilers known as "Grimms," he increasingly finds his responsibilities as a detective at odds with his new responsibilities as a "Grimm." His attempts to shield his fiancée, Juliette Silverton (Bitsie Tulloch), and his partner, Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby), from the hazards of his new life have reached a crisis, leaving Juliette in a mysterious coma and Hank on the verge of a mental breakdown.
With help from his confidants, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) - both reformed Grimm creatures, Nick must help those closest to him while still facing off against all manner of ancient evils, including royal lines dating back to the original profilers themselves, the Grimm Brothers. As Nick develops his ability to harness his inner Grimm, he begins to question what he once knew, never more so than when he is reunited with his mother (guest star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), also a Grimm, whom he thought dead for the past 20 years. Gabrielle's (Virginie Le Brun) idiosyncrasies continue to strain her relationship this week on Shortland Street. Realising that she hasn't been a lot of fun lately, Gabrielle attempts to inject some fun in her life when she agrees to go night clubbing with the gang.
All starts well but Jonathon (Kieren Hutchison) is bemused when Gabrielle begins to get pedantic about the noise level and insists she wear earplugs in the club. Giving his partner stick about her actions, Jonathon is perplexed when Gabrielle is unable to see the funny side of her actions and takes offence. Realising that Jonathon really doesn't understand her, Gabrielle shocks him when she issues an ultimatum.
Waking up with a sore head after a night of night clubbing, Vinnie laughs with Jonathon (Kieren Hutchison) as they recall the hilarity of the night before.
Recounting their antics to the group, Vinnie lets slip that he and Jonathan had stolen a road cone.
Dismissing it as a harmless joke, Vinnie is blindsided when the boys in blue arrive demanding an explanation. |

In September, Jonathan McKenna becomes increasingly frustrated with Gabrielle's focus on work but is then pleasantly surprised when she announces she's juggled her schedule so they can go on holiday together. But their holiday plans are shelved when Callum leaves on a business trip and appoints Gabrielle as CEO in his absence.
Facing mounting pressure from all sides, and a less than supportive Jonathan, Gabrielle beings to feels cornered and as problems build, she panics and quits as CEO. When Jonathan tries to point the blame at Chris and Rachel, an emotional Gabrielle explodes at Jonathon and lays out some very harsh truths about the state of their relationship. Not known for her soft approach, Gabrielle's cutting opinion of hers and Jonothan's relationship might just be the final nail in the coffin for this unlikely couple.

Coming up in July
Since an operation left him unable to see, Jonathon McKenna has struggled with his uncertain future.
However a fledgling relationship with surgeon Gabrielle Jacobs has brought some light into his life - until he realises that his disability may be holding her back.
When a petulant Jonathon indulges in self-pity and refuses to attend a conference with her, Gabrielle considers that this relationship may be doing both of them more harm than good.

TV NZ has today published a preview of things to come on Shortland Street in June, regarding Jonathon it says:
While Rachel McKenna was thrilled and surprised to welcome long-lost brother Jonathon back to Ferndale, he came with a clear agenda.
Since a near fatal accident some months ago, Jonathon has been living with a debilitating neurological condition which causes mood swings and continual pain.
This June his miracle cure proves anything but as he insists on a risky surgery undertaken by Gabrielle Jacobs and Chris Warner.
Despite being warned of its side effects, Jonathon is shocked when he wakes from the surgery to discover that something terrible has happened.
Defenceless and in pain, Jonathon must now rely on his sister to facilitate even the most basic of daily chores.
Trapped in Ferndale, Jonathon begins to feel like his ordeal has only just begun. |

Kieren recently returned to his native New Zealand to reprise the role of Jonathon McKenna on the popular Kiwi soap Shortland Street - his first ever tv role, read more about it here - after leaving the show 15 years ago.

Rachel & Jonathan McKenna - then and now
Yes! It's true! Rachel McKenna's brother Jonathon McKenna is coming back to Shortland Street and the character will be played by the original actor, Kieren Hutchison who first gained the role in the early 90's.
Back in the early days of Shorty, there was a whole McKenna family, Mum Alex McKenna (played by Liddy Holloway - that's Geordie Holibar (Phoenix Raynor) real life grandmother!), Dad Michael McKenna (Paul Gittins, his son Callum Gittins went on to play Jake Valentine), sister Rachel (played by actor/ director Angela Bloomfield and brother Jonathon (Kieren Hutchison).
Michael ran the clinic, Alex ran a bar and the teenagers, well, they bickered and fought like siblings normally do.
Kieren's character Jonathon had some pretty controversial storylines at the time, he was one of Shortland Street's first bisexual characters.
He eventually got fired from his job and left town having given up on med school in 1996.
Now, he's back and the drama is set to continue!
Why is Jonathon back? How will Rachel react? And how long is he back for?
All these questions will be answered over the next couple of months.
Kieren has been living in LA for the last few years, where he has worked on shows such as The Ghost Whisperer and One Tree Hill, but was very excited about being asked back to New Zealand to catch up with the Shortland Street gang.
"In some ways it was like stepping into a time warp," he says. "On one of my first days back I stood on set and the camera op, the vision switcher, the director and the two actors that I was working with were all the same as when I was last on the show! Some things never change around here. But it was really nice to have some familiar faces in the building. Being able to work with Angela (Rachel McKenna) and Michael (Chris Warner) again has been fantastic."

In mid April Shortland Street started to broadcast in HD. The new winter season (season 20) started airing on Monday, May 9. According to the NZ Herald Kieren's first episode will air on Monday, May 23.
Episodes will also be available for watching on demand for viewers inside New Zealand and can even catch up with old episodes weeknights at 8.30 at TVNZ Heartland.
Viewers outside of New Zealand can watch the new episode on youtube.
